The whole base of Islam stands on two statements – That there is only One God and He is only worthy of worship and Prophet Mohammed (ﷺ) is just a slave and messenger of Allah!
If you understand this and do not mix them, then you have understood the soul of Islam. This is the core concept of Islam and so we never associate any partners to Allah – be it any human or jinn or angel. None is comparable unto Allah and none can ever take His place or be as a partner unto Him.
This we need to understand completely before we move ahead on the topic. This is because the topic is quite sensitive and which the people have misunderstood at large. We need to understand that Prophet Mohammad (ﷺ) was just a human like us but he was best among us. So we respect him and adore him and we need to follow him in order to worship and please Allah. And we must not forget that we must ask from Allah alone.
Sadly the bulk of the people today have elevated the prophet (ﷺ) and other pious dead people to such an extent that they in their ignorance have kept them as a partner to Allah and have began asking them for forgiveness and for fulfilling their wishes and desires. This is what he (ﷺ) feared during his last days of life. The reason being, the ploy of shaytan was always to deceive people to consider humans as God or to make them worship those who are alive or dead. Iblees(shaytan) is always looking to deceive and deviate people to go against Allah, unfortunately people fail to understand this. The best example is that of Prophet Jesus (Peace be upon him) whose followers elevated him to the level of God, initially as son of God then considered him only as God and later included his mother also as God. (Naudhubillah)
During the end days of the Prophet, he (ﷺ) used to repeatedly warn and forbade his companions not to elevate him to such an extent like how the Christians have elevated Jesus, son of Mary and they should always call him only a slave and a messenger of Allah. Allah also clearly says in the Quran to take prophets as only messenger and to obey and follow them but we should never consider them as God or auliyas (protectors) or partners unto Him.
Hence we all love our prophet (ﷺ) and adore him. Like wise we also love and believe all the prophets of Allah (Peace be upon them all) but we shouldn’t exaggerate in praise of any of the prophets such that they are elevated to the ranks of Allah. If you do that, then that’s devil’s play & ploy and so don’t fall for it. Beware that’s a clear deception which can take us to the boundaries of shirk landing us to hell-fire. Such a shirk that you don’t even realize until u die and so you don’t get time to repent for your sin. This is really the biggest danger that is hovering over the ummah!
There are many who say that we are only seeking prophet’s intercession but this we shouldn’t be asking our prophet (ﷺ) but we should make this dua to Allah to accept our prophet’s intercession on our behalf. This is because none can intercede without the permission of Allah, this can be seen clearly from the verses of Ayatul Qursi. So please don’t get deceived and fall for the devil’s trap in thinking our prophet (ﷺ) is not dead and he will bless you with things that you need. He (ﷺ) hears only that which Allah allows him to hear. How it’s done, the knowledge lies only with Allah. So don’t assume things especially in the knowledge of the unseen coz we may falter and land up committing sin. And remember that all things what we get are from Allah, whether it’s good or bad and this life is only a test for us. So when good befalls be thankful to Allah and when bad befalls then bear sabr and seek repentance. This is the way of a true believer, he has absolute belief in His Maker alone!
In the end, we are here to worship Allah alone and we are here to follow the way of our prophet (ﷺ). As that’s the way which Allah has made acceptable unto Him. So don’t bring anything new and say it’s good and so we should do in this Deen. As all good what you think in terms of worship, which has not come from our prophet, then it’s all evil and unacceptable at the sight of Allah; leading to disobedience to Allah. And we are directly or indirectly insulting our prophet as well. So beware of that!

My evidence:
(interpreted in English as)
(Quran 1:5): “You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything)”
(Quran 16:36): ❝And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).” Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth).❞
(Quran 6:151): “Say (O Muhammad): “Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited you from: Join not anything in worship with Him….”
(Quran 39:38): And verily, if you ask them: “Who created the heavens and the earth?” Surely they will say: “Allah (has created them).” Say: “Tell me then, the things that you invoke besides Allah – if Allah intended some harm for me, could they remove His harm? Or if He (Allah) intended some mercy for me, could they withhold His Mercy?” Say: “Sufficient for me is Allah; in Him those who trust (i.e. believers) must put their trust.”
(Quran 39:3): “Surely the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Protectors (helpers, lords, gods) besides Him (say): “We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah.” Verily Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever.”
(Quran 10:18): “And they worship besides Allah things that harm them not, nor profit them, and they say: “These are our intercessors with Allah.” Say: “Do you inform Allah of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?” Glorified and Exalted is He above all that which they associate as partners (with Him)!”
Al-Bukhaari (3445) narrated from ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising the son of Maryam, for I am but a slave, so say: the slave of Allah and His Messenger.”
Imam Ahmad (12551) narrated from Anas ibn Maalik that a man said: O Muhammad, O our master (sayyid) and the son of our master, the best of us and the son of the best of us. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “O people, you should fear Allah and do not let the Shaytaan make you get carried away. I am Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah, the slave of Allah and His Messenger. By Allah, I do not like for you to raise me above my station to which Allah appointed me.”
